SKIN CARE 101: WHAT IS YOUR SKIN TYPE?

Have you ever been to the make up store,  looking for your favorite make up  and the attendant asks you , what is your skin type and you are left speechless? worry no more, we have  all been there. I  didn’t know my skin type till an year ago and as a  result i  was using all the wrong products which ended up causing crazy breakouts on my skin. In this post , we will be talking about the main skin types and what they are all about, so  you can understand and hopefully know which skin type category you belong to. Whichever skin type you belong to  always remember you are beautiful just the way you are. Now you might be asking your self why is it important for  you  to know which skin type you belong to,   its simple , knowing your skin type saves you from a lot of skin conditions such as acne, white and black heads and hyper-pigmentation since you are able to care for your skin in the best way possible and if you are a lover of make up, it saves you a ton of time while trying to pick the foundation that suits your face .

lets get right to it , we have five types of skin ; oily , dry, combination , normal and sensitive skin .

1. DRY SKIN

Dry skin occurs when the skin sebaceous glands do not produce enough oil to to properly hydrate and protect the epidermis. The lack of oil can be caused by a number of factors.

  • harsh soaps

  • weather changes

  • sun exposure

  • genetics and conditions like eczema

it is often accompanied  by a persistent , uncomfortable itchy tight feeling that often leads to redness , irritation and inflammation.

characteristics of dry skin include;

  • it flakes due to dryness

  • skin has small pores due to less production of oil

  • appearance of fine lines and wrinkles form around eyes and mouth when smiling

  • skin lacks firmness since the barrier function is compromised.

2. OILY SKIN

Normally this skin type begins producing more oil around puberty when our hormone levels increase. It is characterized by an increased amount of lipids on the skin surface due to overactive sebaceous layers .

characteristics of oily skin type

  •  it is shiny and thick

  • this skin type often has enlarged pores

  • it is prone to black heads, white heads or inflammatory acne such as papules, pimples and pustules.

it is more common in women  than men .Often occurs due to stress, hormonal imbalance or heat.

3. COMBINATION  SKIN

This is the most common skin type  ,whereby you have normal , oily and dry skin all over your face . The most common type is characterized by oily skin on the T- zone  and dry cheeks.

characteristics of combination skin

  • the skin type often changes frequently oily to dry and vice versa.

  • pores  are larger in the T- zone and non existent in the U- zone which is the edges of your face .

  • black heads and clogged pores may appear on the nose  and middle of the face while the cheeks, jaw  and chin are flaky

this skin type mostly occurs due to a lack of balance in areas such as dehydration.

4. NORMAL SKIN

This here is perfection at its best . This skin type is rare since it has no imperfections, normally like a babies skin. It is characterized by a soft texture and even tone throughout the face .The best part of having this skin type is that you can use any skin product  without having to worry about a reaction.

5. SENSITIVE SKIN

In this category , the skin often appears red  especially during the cold seasons . Most of the time it is hard to incorporate  new skin care products due to a risk of a bad reaction  due to sensitivity . Break outs are especially red and hurt when touched .It is characterized by thin skin since the natural barrier is weak.

we all want to have skin that glows and is radiant too  and the best way to start achieving that is by understanding our skin types and taking care of it appropriately.

I guess that means we should be drinking more water as the perfect skin (babies skin) is something like 80% water, if I remember correctly? My skin’s ok, but I don’t use any products on it other than a simple moisturiser which really helps I think.
