EASY , AFFORDABLE HEALTHY SNACK ALTERNATIVES

Healthy living has always been an ultimate goal of mine. However my biggest  problem was every time I decided to engage in  a fitness  journey   I  always ended  up back where I started  reason being,  I never took a keen interest in what i  ate. I actually thought that if I could snack and work out  every single day then for  sure I would keep the weight off .Thats not the case though , if you donot eat healthy then your body suffers too, as much as you exercise you will keep doing the  same thing and  consequently   you  will never see results.Therefore, I researched and learnt simple tricks to take care  of the snack cravings  and came up with a list of my favorite top five healthy snack alternatives that I make almost every single  day. At first its a bit hard to get rid  of the cravings since your body was already used to them but with dedication  everything will fall in place .So lets get right to it and check out these easy, affordable healthy snack alternatives that will not only make you healthy but taste amazing as well.

  1.  THE CLASSIC AVOCADO SANDWHICH

Classic avocado sandwich

Avocados   are  not only one of the best super fruits  but they are also  very unique. This is because avocados  unlike   most fruits  contain high healthy fats as compared to carbohydrates . Avocados   are  rich  in   vitamins  such as vitamins  K  ,C,   B5 , B6 and potassium just to mention a few . Moreover,it  has  healthy  nutrients such as vitamin E which help prevent cholesterol oxidation .In addition , the potassium  in avocados can help to regulate high blood pressure. The biggest plus  however is the fact that they  do not contain any cholesterol  or sodium,  it cant get any better than this. This healthy , affordable snack  can be prepared in less than five minutes and give you  benefits  worth a life time .

INGREDIENTS

  • half a slice of an avocado
  • whole meal bread
  • tomatoes [optional]
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • protein source of choice such as eggs , chicken [optional]

to prepare this all you need is to scoop the avocado and spread it out on the bread followed by the tomatoes and the source of protein chosen. Personally i like the egg- avocado combo it always tastes great .After that you can add salt and black pepper to your liking and wallah!  you have your avocado sandwich  full of great nutrients which can double up  as a snack or as your lunch for the day.

 

2.  BEET ROOT SALAD

Beets are not only an essential vegetable but they are packed with many nutritious vitamins and minerals that all help the body to achieve maximum function.Some of the health benefits of beets are that they help in making the immune systems stronger, they are said to lower blood pressure and to improve brain function so if you  are a student you better get them beets in your system. This salad can be a great snack for those who enjoy  a sweet and sour taste  in foods  , its packed with flavors that will leave you wanting more each time . You will thank me later , trust me.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 beet roots
  • 1 pineapple slice
  • half an apple grated
  • I carrort grated
  • 1/4 red onion
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • half a lemon

all you need to do is to boil your beets up to 30 Minutes and check with a knife if they are ready. If the knife passes through the beets seamlessly then they are ready.  After that you need to cut your beets up into cubes medium sized place them in a bowl then cut your pineapple slice into small cubes and mix them up with your grated carrots and apples plus your diced up quarter onion and place them in the bowl with the beets and lastly add your two tablespoons of olive oil and squeeze the lemon juice onto the salad . Your end product should look something like this.

3.  SIMPLE PEANUT BUTTER -BANANA SMOOTHIE

Peanut butter banana smoothie

Bananas are one of the healthiest fruits in the world. Each banana contains calories which are mostly water and carbohydrates. They are rich in fiber as well. Eating them could help lower the risk of high blood pressure, prevent cancer and diabetes just to mention a few while nuts are packed with proteins,  fiber  and essential fats that are good for the body in general. In this recipe all you need is:

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 peeled bananas (ripe)
  •  A glass of milk
  • Ice cubes
  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • Honey or maple syrup
  • A blender

Put all the ingredients in the blender and blend to your preferred thickness. Personally i would go for the thickest smoothie because it fills you up .  Enjoy it cold.

 

4. CINNAMON GLAZED BANANA SANDWICH

As we mentioned earlier bananas are one of the healthiest fruits packed with lots of goodness.  This other recipe is a simple banana sandwich which can be both a snack or a breakfast choice as well. What you will need for this recipe is ;

INGREDIENTS

  • One banana
  • 2 slices of whole meal bread
  • Cinnamon powder
  • Coconut oil
  • Honey or maple syrup
  • extra fruit of your choice could be blueberries, strawberries or grapes

You will need to heat up your pan with some coconut oil which is very healthy contrary to the popular belief that it isn’t. Once the oil has melted place your sliced bananas and  sprinkle the cinnamon powder on top of it. Let each side cook for about a second each. After that is done you can chooses  a spread for your bread either peanut butter or honey, followed by your cinnamon glazed bananas and finally your extra fruit. There you have it a healthy snack alternative under 5 minutes.

 

5. APPLES

An apple a day does keep the doctor away. Apples are one of the most healthiest fruits in the  world. They are packed with antioxidants and phyto nutrients which all help to reduce cancer,  improve brain function and reduce diabetes just to mention a few.  They also contain many vitamins such as C, B and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus which are all essential for the body. The best thing is that they are  easy to find affordable and a good snack for keeping the sweet cravings aside. In this recipe all you need is

INGREDIENTS

  • Apples
  • Peanut butter preferably the smooth kind

All you need to do for this simple healthy snack alternative is to cut up your apples in slices and use the peanut butter as a dip. This apple dip is both nutritious and delicious and can be taken as a snack to school,  work or just for a movie snack.
